In the Fire

No one likes those times when stress gets turned up, deadlines mount, and expectations seem unreachable. But sometimes God uses heat in our life to burn off the stuff that’s tying us down. We just need to trust God through the pain. What’s got us tied up? What’s limiting us from being all God meant for us to be? God can use the trials in our life to eliminate what’s holding us back. God says in Isaiah 48:10, “I have refined you but not in the way silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.” It’s highly unlikely we’ll literally go through a fiery furnace in our life, but we’ll go through the furnace of suffering many, many times. God will refine us with that fi

Devotion or Fear?

Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10 & 11 I can’t imagine what went through the minds of the shepherds the night Jesus was born. They were ordinary men, going about their ordinary jobs on what they thought was an ordinary day. We all know that in an instant our days can change course. Sometimes for the good and sometimes with sadness. But this day, the change was not only for the good of those that the angels visited but for all mankind! In an instant, the angel of the Lord appeared. They had to have been afraid because t

Standing Up for God

Standing up for God when we’re afraid isn’t just the right thing to do. It also builds our faith and our character. Reputation is what we want people to think we are. Character is what we really are. Character is who we are when no one is watching. Character and faith are like muscles. The only way we build a muscle is by stressing it. That’s what we do in weightlifting. When we lift weights, we’re straining our muscle, we’re stretching our muscle, and we’re stressing our muscle. Our muscle doesn’t grow unless it’s strained, stretched, and stressed. The same is true with our “courage muscle.” We’re not developing any spiritual, emotional, or relational muscle when we give in to fear instead

Have I Left the Door Open?

On the news recently, there was a story about a couple who fell 800 feet off Taft Point Overlook in Yosemite National Park. The park reported that they might have 8 to 10 deaths a year but this one was unusual. The rangers came the next day and found a tripod still standing. It seems the couple got to the edge so they could take a selfie. Rangers said visitors are warned that unexpected winds can suddenly happen and they figure they were too close to the edge, nothing but each other to grab and over they went. Helicopters located them the next day. The woman was wearing a “Wonder Woman” suit and the newspaper reported that this couple were “adventure Junkies”. They enjoyed the adrenalin

Be Careful in theGray Area of Life

I Corinthians 6:12 "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful: All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything." 1. Is it good for me? Will it add a plus to my life? What would Jesus do? 2. Will it get control of me, or will it lessen Christ's control of me?I Corinthians 6:19-20 "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own for you were bought with a price? So glorify God in your body." 3. Ask....As God's property, can I justify this activity or action? Is this activity or action befitting a real follower of Jesus Christ? I Corinthians 8:9, 12-13 "But take heed le

No Shame

Uh oh! I clamped my mouth shut. While in a church service, I had suddenly awoke with my mouth wide open. Quickly looking around, I didn’t see anyone smiling at me. Guess I avoided embarrassment that time. There have been other times when I didn’t avoid embarrassment: I’ve spoken when I didn’t know what I was talking about. I wrongly accused a friend of a misdeed. I angrily shouted at a child’s ball game. I forgot the name of a school friend. I loudly belched in a public restaurant. Sometimes I could laugh off my embarrassment as human deficiency. Other times, I needed to apologize for hurtful words I had spoken or had to ask God’s forgiveness. “Shame on you,” a mother told her child because

Stand Before the Lord

“Meanwhile all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.” 2 Chronicles 20:13-14 ESV It was common in that day that they would come and stand all day sometimes to just hear the scripture being read. When faced with adversity or a life struggle you have to stand before the Lord. Devotion is needed. Sometimes we give up too quick like we tried that, and it didn’t work let’s try something else. Stand until you get an answer, sometimes life is too loud to hear what the Father

A Living Sacrifice

Brothers and sisters, God has shown you his mercy. So I am asking you to offer up your bodies to him while you are still alive. Your bodies are a holy sacrifice that is pleasing to God. When you offer your bodies to God, you are worshiping him in the right way. Romans 12:1 The thing that we should want the most is to live a life of worship and devotion to God. Living a life of worship and devotion to God would mean to separate ourselves from sin. It would mean that sometimes we need to turn off the TV, say “no” to the activity or social event, it could even mean rearranging our schedule to make more time for God (reading our Bible and praying). There is a special lady in the Bible named

Clothe Yourself Today or Another Way to put it...Warm Yourself by God's Word.

Sharon White February 20 Bring the heat for the battle! Jeremiah 23:29 "Is not my word like a fire," declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? Clothe yourself with my for battle." Romans 13:14 "But clothe or put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts." Make no provision for the flesh means before and to think in the Greek. Paul says, don't go there. God is conforming you by His word in your life to be life the image of the son. Studying God's word and memorizing it, is clothing yourself with His thoughts emerging out of you daily through your speech, actions, and deeds. Today, bring a "fi

Golden Calf Christianity

Dr. A. W. Tozer was a respected theologian and writer. When he wrote his books he always wanted to encourage the reader to moral action. Often you find him “rapping” your spiritual knuckles as you read his work. I have been reading a devotional this year called “Evenings with Tozer”. Often I think they were just written yesterday. Look at this one that was penned thirty-seven years ago! One can only conclude that God’s professed children are bored with Him, for they must be wooed to meeting with a stick of striped candy in the form of religious movies, games and refreshments. It is scarely possible in most places to get anyone to attend a meeting where the only attraction is God! So we

The Nuptial March Neareth

Humility is a Choice!

When we’re successful, it’s much easier to fall hard than it is to maintain our success. We tend to get proud and forget about God, and success crumbles when we do that. If you’ve found yourself in that situation, the first step to take is absolutely critical. The Bible says, “Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” (Revelation 2:5). If we’re getting proud, we must repent. That means we change our mind. We go from thinking one way about our life to thinking another way. Why repent? Humility is a choice. We’re never told in Scripture to pray for God to make us humble. It’s

In the English language there is only one word that describes the complexity of human feelings for others and that is the word: LOVE. It was not always that way. According to the Ancient Greeks, they had around 30 words to describe love…in different shades. I’ve chosen a few rods that will help us have a greater understanding of the emotion…which they say from the past, “that makes the world go round.” Agape – It is a God kind of love. This love expresses the deep and constant love and interest of God to an unworthy world, producing and fostering a reverential love in them towards the Giver. Storge- Family love. The love a parent has for a child or a child has for favorite aunt or uncle.

The Greatest of These is Love

But now faith, hope, love abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 Since today is Valentine’s Day, it can mean many things. For some today is exciting. You are going to spend time a new special someone. For others, today is sad because their love has gone on to Heaven ahead of them and the day can be lonely and filled with memories. Some may even have a “love” still with them but aren’t celebrating because things have become habit and common place. Today can even be a day of frustration and anger over a love that once was and is no longer. Whatever today holds for you, never lose sight of the one that sets the example for love. Jesus Christ loves us so

What is God's Love?

“God loves you!” We hear people tell us all the time how much God loves us and how great and wonderful God’s love is. But what does God’s love look like to you? How much does He love us and how can we use His love in our everyday lives through joy, hardships, happiness, and tribulations? Here’s some facts: The word LOVE appears in the Bible (NIV) 551 times and the Definition of love-according to google-is an intense feeling of deep affection. What does God’s love mean to me? God’s love is my comfort, my strength. It gives me peace to know how much God loves me. I don’t, and may never, know exactly just how much He loves me but through faith and the things He does for me, that is enough evide

Holy Ghost Rain

Are you waiting on the rain? Are you listening for the change in the wind? Are you aware of the weather in your walk today? I just sit here and as we talk about a flood coming it comes to my mind and heart it starts with a drop of rain it starts with a change in the weather. I close my eyes the leaves are swirling the smell of the earth is rising to meet the rain as it falls from the heavens. In those moments you can look at the clouds you can look at the mud or you can stand in the awe of what God is doing. The change of the weather seems to kill things but in the beauty of God he is restoring, renewing, transforming. How awe and inspiring! God loves us so much that even the earth goes thro

Wearing Blinders

I feel sorry for horses when I’ve seen them wearing blinders. However, I do realize the blinders’ importance. In races the horses run faster since they aren’t distracted by seeing people and animals along the sidelines. Blinders on farm horses help the farmers to avoid crooked rows for planting their crops. Christians are instructed to look straight ahead, too. The world around us has many distractions to get us sidetracked from the race we are running. These possibilities include greed, position, power, immoral activities, and pleasing others. Focusing on Christ and His direction for our life is important to avoid these sideline distractions. Our “blinders” include attending church services

Deal or No Deal

I recently watched a holiday episode of the hit T.V. show Deal or No Deal. As most of these hi-intensity shows do, it captivated my attention with a touching story of the contestants life and misfortunes that have led them to where they are now. They give a great story of how this opportunity could change their life. As the show gets going, the contestant has to eliminate a few cases at a time to hopefully be left with the case the has 1 million dollars in it. As they go back and forth based on which cases they pick the show makes them a cash offer and then asks them Deal or No Deal. This got me thinking, how many times in life do we play this scenario out with God. We have all these de

Sharing the Gospel

Always use “words” to share the gospel! Yes, your actions (your fruit) is part of sharing the gospel and is a reflection of the gospel in your life, but to truly share the gospel with someone, it takes words. It is a very specific message of good news and how we are saved. Start out in Romans 3:23, it says, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. So, before anything else, we need to recognize that we are sinners and we will never be perfect. Your sin may look different than mine, but we are all in need of a savior. Until we admit that, we have no need for the gospel. Then, let’s go to Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Je
