My Shepherd

From the days of Abraham down to modern times, sheep have abounded in the Holy Land. The Arabs of the Bible land have largely been dependent through the ages upon their sheep. To be successful, there must be a shepherd. This task usually fell to the youngest son in a family. He lived with his flock 24/7 and cared for their every need. Each day he led them out to pasture, and provided protection from their enemies. He loved them and they learned the sound of his voice. Even today when the flocks are brought into a sheep fold for the night and are all mixed together they know their shepherd. Morning arrives, he speaks softly or begins to sing, they follow him out to pasture.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. David had found his shepherd. In the rest of that Psalm he tells all the good things his shepherd does for him. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me besides quiet waters He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

We live in a world full of evil flocks today, but if we know the voice of our shepherd he will lead us in the right path. In addition to our great shepherd, God has given us pastors and teachers to help guide our way.

What a great God we serve
