Who Answers the Door?

There is a very busy household not far from here that houses four generations and a host of activity. When the doorbell rings, a familiar question is, “who is getting the door”—and hopefully the wee ones don’t get there first.

I remember the security I felt as a wife and mother, when my husband was home to answer the door, especially on those late night doorbell rings. However, since he was a State Trooper he had many shifts, out of town assignments, manhunts on occasion, etc. that left me with the responsibility much of the time.

From a spiritual perspective when your doorbell rings, who answers the door? We have several choices and outcomes according to the Word God. Let me share what is the best one.

As believers we know that according John 8:44 speaking of Satan, “there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” We also know he “comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” (John 10:10) So when Satan rings your doorbell we are clear on his method and mission and he loves to make calls on very dark nights when you feel most alone and vulnerable.

We as believers have some glorious promises. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit , who is in you, whom you have received God?” Another favorite passage is John 14 starting at

verse 14 (talking of your Father giving the Holy Spirit), “he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.....he lives with you and will be in you....(He) will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.....Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

So who answers the door? When the devil comes on your doorstep with his bag of lies and trash talk, isn’t it assuring to know that the Spirit of truth can meet him at the door and debunk his method of mission with being your advocate, the reminders of God’s teachings so it follows that God’s peace returns and Satan lies falls to pieces. The good news is that the sweet Holy Spirit abides in you. You are never alone, just make sure He is the one that answers the door.
