Honor | Part 2

Veteran’s Day began at the conclusion on WWI. In November of 1919 President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in American, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations...”

The day was designed for “thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will.” As there are today, in 1918 there were parades, public meetings and business closed. The celebration was to honor American veterans for their patriotism, service, sacrifice and love of country.

As I spend the day with thankfulness for my freedom and the sacrifices and devotion of service men and women, I want to use their example for my life as a Christian. I want to live with complete devotion and obedience to my Lord and Savior. I want to live by faith that He will supply all my needs. I want to dedicate my service and daily life to see that others enjoy the gift of Salvation.

When Paul wrote his last letter, he admonishing Timothy. Paul knew he was nearing the end of his ministry and his execution was imminent. Timothy was timid and Paul knew that he would face hardships as a Christian. Paul also knew that Timothy would face persecution outside the church but he would also have to face false teaching from inside the church. This is what Paul wrote:

Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3

A good soldier? Yes, we know what a good soldier is like: committed, full of faith and obedience and service with complete devotion. Will you follow the example? Find a veteran and thank them for their service. Then, use their example to set a path for your life in following Jesus.

No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. 2 Timothy 2:4
