Set Apart

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. 1 Peter 1:15-16

To be set apart means to save something for a particular purpose. God has set us apart for a very specific purpose. We are to tell the world that Jesus saves! We are to show them God’s great and marvelous love for them by how we live our life. A life that is not conformed to the world but transformed. When our mind is renewed in Christ the world will see the fruit we produce: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Max Lucado quoted St. Cyprian in one of his devotions. This quote that St. Cyprian write is from the third century and is written to his friend Donatus.

This seems a cheerful world, Donatus, when I view it from this fair garden…But if I climbed some great mountain and looked out…you know very well what I would see; brigands on the high road, pirates on the seas, in the amphitheaters men murdered to please the applauding crowds…

Yet in the midst of it, I have found a quiet and holy people…They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They have overcome the world. These people, Donatus, are Christians…

This quote notes the height of our purpose. To live a life that others notice and points them to Christ. Quiet, not obnoxious or boastful. Holy, set apart for His purpose.

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20
