Open My Eyes

“When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please ropen his eyes that he may see. ”So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:15-17

In 2 Kings 6 there is a fascinating story recorded about Elisha, the prophet. As Elisha prophesied both good things and bad as directed by God, he had his share of opposition. In this story the King of Syria was seeking to kill him because he continually thwarted his plans to harm the King of Israel. At first the King of Syria thought he had a traitor in his own camp. However, the truth was revealed that God was speaking to Elisha who in turn spoke to the King of Israel keeping him from the destruction that was planned for him.

The solution to this problem seemed simply enough to the King of Syria—kill Elisha so God’s revelation stops. It was not a difficult plan to implement, call the King’s vast army, surround the city where Elisha and his servant were staying and destroy them.

With this plan in place, the servant of Elisha arose in the morning to see that they were completely surrounded by chariots and horses of this vast army. Panic, alarm, anxiety were very present in this servant’s assessment of what was in front of him. He could see the enemy very clearly and it appeared there was no way of escape.

When Elisha’s servant hurriedly reported what was around them, not only did Elisha see the enemy, Elisha saw something else. Elisha saw that they had “more for them than against them” and while Syria had horses and chariots had surround them—God had horses and chariots of FIRE surrounding them. After Elisha prayer for his servant for the Lord to open his eyes to see clearly what he saw—the servant saw it to.

It is my prayer continually that God will open my eyes to see what he is doing for me. The enemy always will have a plan of destruction, but God has a greater plan of delivery and victory. Open my eyes that I might see the One that is for me rather than the one who is against me. Let me realize that there are more for me than against me. May it resonate within me, “greater is He that is within me than he that is within the world.” (1 John 4:4)
