Flee to Safety

“There go the birds again,” Larry commented when we drove on the bridge over Clark’s Fork River, east of Bridger, MT.

The Barn Swallows had built a multitude of nests under the bridge. The noise of a vehicle and movement of the bridge caused the birds to instantly fly up out of sight. They flee the area and then in a few minutes circle around above the bridge checking to see if it is safe to return to the nests.

As Christians, there are some situations not safe for us and we should flee. Physically leaving a place or person is a good idea when we are presented with immorality, lying, vulgar language, pornography, or gossip. Throw a book away. Turn the TV off or change channels. Excuse yourself from a social situation.

When greed, lust, envy, or pride rises in our thoughts, we need to get our mind focused on something uplifting. Diligently reading, quoting, and thinking on God’s goodness, provision, and forgiveness will help us flee the destructive thoughts.

God’s Word is not a hard task-master, it is a safety guide for our spirit, soul and body.

“Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:24-27 (NIV)
