Love

In the English language there is only one word that describes the complexity of human feelings for others and that is the word: LOVE.

It was not always that way. According to the Ancient Greeks, they had around 30 words to describe love…in different shades. I’ve chosen a few rods that will help us have a greater understanding of the emotion…which they say from the past, “that makes the world go round.”

Agape – It is a God kind of love. This love expresses the deep and constant love and interest of God to an unworthy world, producing and fostering a reverential love in them towards the Giver.

Storge- Family love. The love a parent has for a child or a child has for favorite aunt or uncle.

Pragma-Love which endures. The love between a married couple which develops over a long period of time. The love which endures in sickness or in health.

Philantia-Self-respect. The love we give ourselves. Also, the strength to care for ourselves so that we can in turn care for others.

Philia-Shared experience. The love we feel for people we strive with to achieve a shared goal. Brotherly love.

Ludus-flirting, playful affection. The feelings we have when we test out what it might be like to be in love with someone.

Eros-romantic and erotic love. This love is based on sex and powerful magnetism. This one can get you into trouble.

To get a real handle on love and it’s true meaning please take time and study out 1 Corinthians 13. This chapter, the hymn of love will come alive to you as you take your time and study slowly. Try reading it three ways: 1. Read it as Paul wrote it 2. Put the words “Jesus Christ” in place of the word “love” and read it again 3. Read the passage also as a prayer for your own life, that the virtues of love will be manifest in you.

Live love loudly today!
