Appreciate What You Have

In 2004, Larry and I bought a used 1987 motor home. It had been well cared for and would serve our purposes. We traveled to Texas from Montana and spent the winter there. Then the next summer we drove to Alaska and back. The motor home worked great and we had a wonderful time, but I had to watch my attitude as envy wanted to rise up when I saw newer and fancier RV’s.

In 2007 we upgraded to a new 5th wheel trailer, not because of envy but for the room and comfort on long trips. It was a wonderful home away from home, but I didn’t enjoy the beautiful scenery any more than I had with the older motor home. The meals we shared with others didn’t taste any better, nor did I sleep any sounder at night.

As humans no matter what we have, we seem to want more and newer. Whether it is housing, vehicles, clothing, furniture, jewelry or anything. Being discontent with what God provides is not a godly attribute, instead it is unthankfulness.

Happiness doesn’t depend upon having nice things.

“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Philippians 4:12 (NIV)
