The Fig Tree Passion Week Part 3

Now in the morning as he (Jesus) returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward forever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

Jesus was hungry and since the fig tree had leaves, the expectation was to find fruit. The fig tree was barren, not producing fruit. Because of it’s lack of fruit, the fig tree was cursed and forever barren. I find it interesting that the disciples had been with Jesus all this time and still marveled at the miracle. They marveled at the suddenness of the tree withering. It withered away in an instant. Jesus went on to encourage the disciples.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. Matthew 18:21

Our faith should be as certain as the promise. Confident in His power without dispute. We must ask in prayer, believing.

At the Cross (1707)

Alas! And did my Savior bleed. And did my Sovereign die! Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I!

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away.

It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day!
