Parable of the Talents Part 1
First, the story begins with these simple words, “It (the kingdom of heaven) will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” (Matthew 25: 14) God has made us stewards of His property. His property could be our actual talents, our gifts, actual physical things, money, etc. We need to understand that God has put us in charge of His property. We learn next that each servant has a different amount of money entrusted to him, “Each according to his ability.” (Matthew 25: 15) Everyone receives something, but not everyone receives the same amount. In our day it is tempting to complain that we have not received as much as someone else, but we can be sure that God Himself has given us the ability to care for what we have. “After a long time the master of those servants returned,” Jesus continued. He is telling us that His return is sure, and upon His return we are called into account regarding our dealings with His property. Do we realize that God has entrusted us with His property? Do we realize that we are going to account on that day for how we handled God’s property? Are we handling His property (the talents he has given us, the life we have been blessed with, the money we are entrusted with) the way He would handle it?
