Plumb Line
What is a plumb line? In the world’s terms it is a line with a plumb attached to it, used for finding the depth of water or determining the vertical on an upright surface. A plumb line is a weight suspended from a string used as a vertical reference line to ensure a structure is centered. How does the Bible refer to a plumb line?
Amos 7:8 And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”
“A plumb line,” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
The Word is our plumb line. The Bible is our guide for life. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. It is our foundation. We build layers upon the foundation with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. If our foundation is off with unrighteous acts or sin then our building will be out of plumb. If our home we live in was out of plumb at the foundation then everything that rises from that foundation like the frame and the walls would be out of plumb and when storms arise this house will fall.
Matthew 7:24-27
The Wise and Foolish Builders
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
