“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15
On average, we make 35,000 choices daily, which is a large number. We recently challenged our youth group to reflect on their choices and the factors that drive their decision-making. Joshua gave a good perspective on what drives our choices. Are you choosing to serve the one true God or the gods of your ancestors? But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15. Joshua knew that serving the world would cause us to be empty-handed, always trying to find joy but coming up unfulfilled. He knew that serving God was the only way to joy and fulfillment. He witnessed what happened to the Israelites when they forgot where God had brought them, and they returned to serving the gods of their ancestors. They came up empty-handed and delayed God’s promise. Ultimately, our daily choices are driven by who we choose to serve. Do your daily decisions reflect those of the world or God?
