God Works Prepared for Us

“Thank you, Helen, the current devotional just made my morning,” my friend Phyllis e-mailed me.

I enjoy writing devotionals and hearing from people of how God spoke to them through the various topics. Composing the inspirational pieces requires me to rely on God, seek out His scriptures, and express the thoughts in ways others will understand. Hours fly by as I work and rework the articles. Readers associate with my blunders, successes, and prayers. It is a rewarding task.

However, I can get so goal oriented with my writing I forget to seek God for other directives from Him. He reminded me that the good works prepared for me could vary. A lonely neighbor may need to hear about God’s love that day. Encouraging a friend whose child is disobedient is a good work. Writing a note to a church member who lost a loved one could give them hope. Listening to a hurting family member will bless them.

Even though God consistently confirms to me that writing devotionals are designed by Him, I don’t want to limit Him in ways He desires to use me.

“For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
