“But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith. For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.” - 1 Thessalonians 3:6-8
We mustn’t think of letters like we do today. Letters written in Paul’s day took great care to write and deliver. Timothy meets Paul in Corinth and delivers the news of the Thessalonian church. He reports these new believers are standing firm despite persecution. In verse 7 Paul describes this as “a comfort.” In response to this news, Paul writes them a letter, and these letters become a part of the New Testament. This confirms that God’s word is one of the best tools for establishing new Christians in their faith. In 2 Thessalonians 4:15 Paul writes, “Therefore, brethren stand fast
and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.”
There is no replacement for God’s word. The Bible establishes us because it is the inspired word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 - 17 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Every major doctrine of faith is discussed in 1 Thessalonians. The doctrine of our faith must be important because Paul chose this to write on. He could have updated them on his position or his trials but the apostle wastes no time with other things. He focuses on doctrine. Seeing Paul’s priorities, should the church of
today be concerned with theirs?
Knowledge and understanding of the Bible are essential for spiritual growth and maturity. God established the church so believers could be instructed and grow in God’s word. Paul sent Timothy to establish the Thessalonians in God’s word. The Thessalonians received this ministry and were strengthened through trial, tribulation, and persecution. How do you think we would stand today? Are we faithful to receive those who deliver God’s word?
