“May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; May He send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion; May He remember all your offerings, And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your purpose. We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with the saving strength of His right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

Psalms 20:1-7 NKJV

My God holds all things in His hands. In this passage of scripture you see David singing of God as His defender and the One who gives Him strength. The God who’s banner says, Yahweh Nissi-The Lord our Banner. He is the one who protects and defends.

Often times we find ourselves in a place where we are being attacked. Our enemy is breathing down our necks and we actually feel alone. David encountered many battles, and He himself had times where He felt alone. The battle was not going how He thought it should go. We all find ourselves thinking this is not how things should go. We are living in a world where we are in a constant state of battle. We get to face and deal with an enemy who wants nothing more than to take everything from us.

I had the privilege of speaking with a person who had come out of a bad situation where they had been mistreated very badly. We were discussing this very topic. The person told me, “ I found myself at times wondering who was going to protect me. I would pray and ask for God to help me. Looking back He did, I was protected the whole time. “They said it was not how I thought it should go, but looking back God helped me even when I couldn’t help myself. For that I know Him as my protector.

Sometimes life hurts, but our God is our protector. And just like David we need to sing of how He is our strength and our hope. I know God and I fight under His banner.
