Sparrows

Are two sparrows not sold for a penny? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the Father. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31

Sparrows are a plain bird. They are common too. They can be seen almost anywhere. Many even consider the sparrow an insignificant bird but not God. It is not hard to feel insignificant at times, but it is important for us to always remember our lives and our purpose in life is significant to God. God values each and every one of us. He desires our love. We have free choice but God’s desire is for us to love him on our own because we want to not because we are forced. God desires our fellowship. He wants to spend time with us, so much so that He sent Jesus to die on the cross for us. He cares about us so much that he knows how many hairs we have on our head. Wow! He knows all about us and loves us any way. Matthew 10 is clear, if an insignificant plain bird dies or falls, God knows about it BUT it is also clear, we are more important than a sparrow.

The sparrow lets us know that we can take comfort knowing how valued we are by God and that we can trust in God’s provision and protection. We can find security when we dwell in the presence of God. Years ago, we sang a song, His Eye is on the Sparrow. It goes like this:

Why should I feel discouraged, Why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, And long for heav’n and home; When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is he; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me.

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free; For his eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, Whenever clouds arise; When songs give place to sighing, When hope within me dies, I draw the closer to him, From care he sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, And I know he watches me.

Guess what! He watches you too!
