Special Water

“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14 (ESV)

The setting of this passage is Jesus speaking to a broken Samaritan woman. Her life had been a disappointing one to this point, but everything was about to change. Little did she realize that this was the day she would meet Jesus. This woman was confused yet, intrigued by Jesus. Why would he even talk to her when that was not the accepted custom? Even more than this, how could Jesus know her history and then offer to forgive her past and give her a future. This lady took Jesus at his words, “that he would give her a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

She immediately went from one seeking physical water to one sharing eternal water that she just could not keep to herself. Her encounter with Jesus changed her world, neighborhood and community. May we be as eager to share the good news of this special water “welling up to eternal life.”
