The First to Know

Luke 2: 8-20 paints a picture for us that has been a focus point of many nativity and Christmas stories. It is the story of shepherds who were in the field the night of Jesus’ birth when the angels appeared and instructed them on who, what, and where the events of the night were happening. There are a couple of details I would like to point out in this story. God chose a group of people who society at the time had labeled as about as low on the social ladder as you could get to be the first group to hear about the birth of the Messiah. He even sent an entire host of angles to sing and shout and announce the arrival to them. The parable of the 100 sheep and a Sheppard leaving the 99 to go after the one (Luke 15:3-7) is a major focal point of the ministry of Jesus and His teaching while he was here on earth. It seems even more powerful that they become the first to meet Jesus. Could it be that having such a humble beginning in a barn and laying in a manger that God new Shepherds would relate to this and accept this more than a noble person, or someone of status would?

Choosing the Shepherd’s to be the group chosen to meet Jesus first, set the stage for the World to see that everyone is accepted and invited to know, meet, and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. You too, regardless of your status in this world can have a life changing experience and lasting relationship with Jesus Christ. God calling on the most unlikely, and unworthy group to meet the Savior of the world first gives Hope to the world that he desires a relationship with everyone. I want you to know that you are worthy in the eyes of God through the blood of Jesus and that He made you perfect in his image.
