The Gift of Gold...What is Your Gift?
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came…and there ahead of them went a star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, His mother; and they knelt down and paid Him homage. Then opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:1, 9-11
What is the meaning of these gifts that the wise men gave to the baby Jesus? These three gifts were very valuable items, monetarily…fine and expensive gifts.
Looking at the one gift, the gift of the gold. It has served as an article of enduring value throughout the ages. Not like silver, it is highly resistant to oxidation and corruption. It is soft and, as they say, malleable, warm and beautiful. Gold holds its value, even as other goods or metals rise and fall.
In today’s world, gold represents love and honor…especially in weddings. The golden ring given to the bride, the groom showing his love, honor and commitment. Today we don’t give God or Jesus things to show our worship because all He wants from us is our hearts. Let’s look at some verses in order to bring clarity…
Mark 12:30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind, and with all your strength.
God wants all of you! 1 Samuel 16:7…but the Lord looks on the heart of man.
Read Hebrews chapter 2…don’t harden your heart.
Proverbs 23:26 My Son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in My ways.
Today, give God spiritual gold…your heart and don’t lose heart doing it!
