When Life Shouts, God Whispers

Listening is a rare art that has almost disappeared from our everyday lives. I feel it’s one of the missing ingredients in all relationships. It seems as now people love to yell, threaten, manipulate, or withdraw, but few love to listen. Between the media and social platforms of today’s world which have not helped us cultivate a society that listens at all.

This same ingredient (listening) is required in our times with God. God does not speak with a megaphone. He speaks with a still, small voice, in which Elijah discovered this: “Then He said, ‘Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”(1 Kings 19:11-12)

Notice that God’s voice came to Elijah as a gentle whisper. We have to be quiet to hear a whisper. I believe that God speaks to us but we miss out on what he’s saying because we’re not listening.

How can we quiet our minds and minimize the distractions that get in the way of hearing from God? We all want to obey and serve God, but how if you can’t hear or feel anything... We need to stop and listen. We need to quiet our minds and listen for God to speak.

1. Commit to building a relationship with God.

2. Carve out time every day in silence and clear your mind.

3. Read His word!

4. Pray and meditate!

This is how God will speak to you. You probably won’t see Him with your eyes until heaven. You probably won’t hear Him with your ears until you meet Him face to face, but He does speak to your mind every day.

Your mind is like a satellite dish to hear from God. He communicates like a WiFi signal. We can’t see or hear the signal, but the signal is there.

So, take a few moments find your quiet spot every day to turn on your satellite (your mind) commit to God, read, pray and meditate. Your ability to hear God will come from these quiet moments, when the roar of the world will fade away, and the gentle voice of your Heavenly Father will lead you to better places.

Listen and Be blessed...
