Stand Guard

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 I am sure that when I say the word soldier, a mental picture pops into your mind. It might be a modern day picture of a soldier on the battlefield with camouflage, helmet, boots and a gun. Some of you might have pictured a Roman soldier from Jesus’ day. The image would be similar, strong leather sandals for the feet, a helmet with a feathered plume and a sword. The common element for any image of a soldier is a weapon. A weapon is used for attacking someone or defending yourself in war. Since our body is the temple of God and as Christians Christ lives in our hearts, it is importa

A Gift

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:5 We are blessed to be able to keep our grandchildren while their parents work. Our days are always eventful! Our grandson is 2, he is starting to talk more and is saying funny things. We find ourselves laughing most of the day about something he has said or done. He is a busy little guy and keeps us on our toes. Our little princess is 5. She will be starting school next year and we will miss her imagination and company. It has been wonderful to be able to go on adventures, “have school” and just share “life” with our grandchildren. Since they are with us every day, they are o

Have Mercy

I was reading in Luke chapter 18 about the blind beggar. It’s an awesome thing how as many times as we read the Word of God a new revelation continues to pour out. This story that I had read so many times, now revealed a new truth to me. Luke 18:38 “He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” This is where I had to stop and really see what was happening. This man, in an impossible situation, with an impossible request is shouting at the top of his lungs because he knows the answer is before him. He knows all the facts, and if that wasn’t enough the crowd of p

Step Out Without Fear

Today, step out in the area that God wants you to and don't fear a thing. Looking at life, the greatest single enemy you will face is the enemy of fear. Fear can attack you in every area - your health, your finances, your job, your family and the list goes on. Everyone has a problem with this intruder we call fear. God says, Men's hearts fail them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Luke 21:26 The Apostle Paul wrote, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1:7 Fear comes from the devil. Fear is a spirit. Fear has torment. Stir yourself up and

God is Calling

Over the past few years I have spent a great deal of time in the woods hunting turkeys. This time of year, one of the was to hunt turkeys is to listen to his calling. An ole’ tom turkey has an unmistakable sound called a gobble. To a hunter, it is sweet music. God is calling to all of us in the same way. A call of love. Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but to his own purpose and grace. 2 Timothy 1:9 Listening to God’s call was one of the greatest things I have ever done. Romans 8:28 says, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Listen to God’s call, h

The Potential of a Sack Lunch

“After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?" This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little." One of His disciples,

In our world today we all put on masks. Whether it be layers of clothing, makeup or hair gel. We change the way we look, we bejewel ourselves and we try to keep up with current trends. We often put on different faces to please others. But truly, why are we? Jesus didn't conform to others, he stood out, he didn't worry what others thought, or felt about him. He was true to himself and stood with the Word of God. His character was reflected in the Father. What is your reflection in the father? Are you putting on any masks? Are you trying to cover anything up? Or… are you talking openly and honestly? Are you walking in the light God put you in? What does your reflection look like? Do you like

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20 Salvation is a resurrection of our crucified flesh. We no longer live under self-sufficiency but everything we do and say comes from the Father. We surrender control to God, being grateful for His presence and yearning for more of Him. The Passion Week is past and Easter for another year is behind us. We celebrated Christ’s resurrection. The very foundation of our belief is faith in the fact that Jesus is alive and sitting at the right hand of the Father. Because H

Fire Fighters

In July of 2002, a forest fire scorched part of the Pryor mountains, about twenty-five miles southeast of Bridger, Montana. Started by lighting, it burned six-thousand acres of pine trees in a mountainous terrain. For ten days three-hundred forest fire-fighters were stationed in Bridger. They set up their headquarters on the grade school grounds. About one-hundred small tents scattered out on the school playground, with a multitude of trucks, and a converted school bus they used for their transportation. They also brought a huge generator to provide their own electricity. When the fire was contained, the fire fighters left town as quickly as they came. The school grounds were back to normal,

Palm 1

There is no definite evidence to his authorship of this Psalm 1, but a strong similarity between the Proverbs and Psalm 1. Well, at this time we will say that Solomon is the author. Story behind the Psalm: The father is talking to his son. Let's say this father is Solomon and the son is Rehoboam, who succeeded him on the throne. He is teaching him the way to blessedness and is warning him about the destruction of those who follow evil. The Jews used the first Psalm as instruction to children in family worship. It was memorized by each child and quoted and sung over and over. The father gathered the family together also and explained the recipe for daily success from this Psalm 1. It is

Parable of the Talents Part 2

Each servant in the story presents the master with the results of their stewardship. They tell their own story first as the Master listens, but the Master has the final word. When the first servant demonstrates that he has managed his affairs well and worked as the Master would work; the Master speaks. He is proud of how the servant handled the money/gifts he was given, gave the servant more responsibility and told the servant to share in the Master’s happiness (Matthew 25: 21). God delights in our responsible stewardship of His gifts. The same is true for the second servant who wasn’t given as much as the first servant. But the third servant is a different story. He didn’t manage his

Parable of the Talents Part 1

First, the story begins with these simple words, “It (the kingdom of heaven) will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” (Matthew 25: 14) God has made us stewards of His property. His property could be our actual talents, our gifts, actual physical things, money, etc. We need to understand that God has put us in charge of His property. We learn next that each servant has a different amount of money entrusted to him, “Each according to his ability.” (Matthew 25: 15) Everyone receives something, but not everyone receives the same amount. In our day it is tempting to complain that we have not received as much as someone else, but we c

Stewardship Part 2

The fundamental principle of stewardship is that God owns everything, we are simply managers acting on His behalf. It’s the one of the first assignments God gave the human race in Genesis 1:28 (MSG). That’s when God told Adam and Eve to “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.” God commands us to “Take Charge” which means to understand our rightful position that God has given us. To “Be Responsible” in managing His assets. And to “Prosper” doing it. What a command! Am I taking charge of everything in my life that God has blessed me with? That means our time, talents,

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the word stewardship is Lord of the Rings. The kingdom of Gondor had a steward ruling over it because the true king had not returned to take his rightful spot. The steward was in control of the kingdom. He acted on the king’s behalf and in the king’s best interest. He was in charge of the dealings of everyday, he was in charge of how the people were treated, and he was in charge of the resources. However, he was not the owner of it. It was the king’s. That is how I think of how we are to handle everything in this world. We are not the owners of it, we are only stewards. Put here by God and entrusted by God to enact His will in ho

Handling God's Money Part 4: Offerings

One verse that I am need to constantly remind myself about is Acts 20:35. Paul is saying his farewell to the Ephesians and he says “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” When speaking of money, budgeting and getting out of debt; we can’t get so focused on those things that we forget that we need to be givers. We need to give of our time, give of our efforts, give of our money, and be a people that has a focus on others rather than a focus on ourselves. I need a slap in the face about this topic every day. Proverbs 11:24 says “One gives freely,

Handling God's Money Part 3: Debt

Bill’s TV isn’t the best so he decides to go buy a new one. Since Bill doesn’t have the money saved up, he decides to buy the $800 TV on his credit card. His credit card charges 15% interest (which is average). He can only pay $50 a month towards the TV purchase. How much extra does he pay for that TV? This is a great math question that I made up and gave to my students, but it gives a good example of what credit cards and debt do to our finances. The answer is about $100 extra. Are you willing to pay $100 extra for a TV, because you want it right now or are you willing to save up to purchase it with cash? Proverbs 22:7b says “the borrower is slave to the lender.” What a statement!

Handling God's Money Part 2:Budget

Do you know where your money is going every month? Are you spending $250 a month eating out and didn’t realize that you were spending that much? Are you getting to the end of the month and realizing there isn’t enough money? Luke 14: 28-30 states “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’” This verse explains the common sense of handling money. We would never go in to building a house without first looking at the cost. But how

Handling God's Money Part 1: Tithe

Since we now know that everything is God’s, how do we responsibly handle God’s money? Proverbs 3:9 states “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” It tells us how to honor the Lord, it is what we should desire in life: honoring the Lord. We honor Him by giving our firstfruits of everything we earn. Firstfruit is often referred to as tithe. A similar scripture in Lev 27:30 that uses the word tithe, which means one tenth. We are to give 10% of our earnings to the Lord. It is how we honor Him and trust that He is in control. We are only stewards of His money, so we are to be obedient and follow His instructions in tithing. Continuing with the scriptu

Christ Arose! Passion Week Part 8

Up from the grave He arose! With a mighty triumph o’er His foes; He arose a Victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with His saints to reign, He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! Low in the grave He lay. Jesus my Savior waiting the coming day. Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior! Vainly they seal the dead. Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Savior! He tore the bars away! Jesus was dead and they wanted to make sure it stayed that way. They remembered that He said after three days I will rise again. So they put guards on the tomb and sealed the stone. Their plan safe and secure. But God! Satan’s plan is just that! A plan. And behold, there was a great
