Burnt Out

You’ve probably burned yourself out a time or two as well. It could be pride, or it could be stubbornness that keeps us from asking for help. Maybe it's the fact that we have too much on our plate. Whatever it is, it costs us too much in the long run. After doing so much, we become like a dull ax. We work harder and harder, but don’t get some as much as we used to when we were sharp. We wear ourselves out exerting too much effort on our own. Ecclesiastes 10:10 says, “Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed” (NLT). We need to resharpen ourselves from time to time so we can continue to be effective at what we are called to

The Temple

God dealt with me on this so I figured I might as well write it out. So this was for me, and is not meant to offend anybody. When Solomon’s temple was destroyed it was prophesied that God would build another. When Christ came to earth he was just that. God’s presence can only dwell in a pure and sinless temple. Christ coming and dying on the cross was for you and for me and a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus said that he would tear down the temple and build it back in three days. This confused the religious leaders of that time because they did not know the reason Christ coming to the earth. But after God’s forgiveness of our sins and when a Christian is born again he sends his Holy Spirit to c

You Knew Me

Psalm 139:13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. God knew me before my parents ever did; isn't that amazing! He knew the plans He had for me, Jeremiah 29:11. He knew all about me before I was even conceived in my mother's womb. How can people say there is no God? That, I can not understand. I am glad I know the creator of my heart and He is the love of my life. Thank you, Jesus. Bonnie Castleberry

From the Impossible to the Possible

We all have guilty pleasures and one of mine is the DYI channel. I love programs that tear down stuff and rebuild, especially old houses. I also watch HGTV and see how people are always looking for a new start to life. It might require a new living space, a house, a location, or just a view. You could say our entire life is about “remodels”. I want to lose a few pounds; I want to get rid of a habit; I want more friends; I want to be smarter. You might say it this way; If it is possible to “remodel” your home, is it not possible to make an unhealthy family healthy? As a child I wanted everything to change. I wanted a house with indoor plumbing and water; I wanted my own room; a room where you

Thirsty for God!

What if we thirsted for God like that of a man who had been wondering the desert for 3 or 4 days without water? David did. He prayed: “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1). His prayer resonates with us because this world is a dry and weary desert with no water. I often use his prayer to remind myself of how thirsty I am for God. One way I’ve done this is to paraphrase portions of Psalm 63 into a “Thirsty for Jesus” prayer. Remember Jesus’ wonderful invitation to us who are thirsty: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has

No Form, No Purpose

Please read Genesis, chapters 1-26, from your Bible. Have you met someone who did not have a clue why they were here or what was their purpose of living? Take them back to Genesis to read that our sovereign God All Mighty (the Trinity), created all things and He pronounced that it was all GOOD. But it was after the creation had taken “form with a purpose”. God the Father, Jesus, the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit all existed before creation and has always been, will always be. His realm or scope of what was created, far exist the entire physical universe and whole living cycle, of any living thing, is so complicated beyond the human mind's understanding. To this day scientist are puzzled as

Breathe

There is a song out that is called, “Breath.” In this song there are lines that state; This is my daily bread, This is my daily bread, Your very word spoken to me. I could not ask for a word from God, like I need one now, dealing with my grandchildren. They cross the line and Papa has to discipline them. The scripture in Hebrews 12 gives us true insight for disciplining. Hebrews 12:10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Looking at this verse, most discipline comes from poor management at home and not looking to what's going to be the best discipline for the child. Example: A father watching T

Come Home

John 14:23 If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. How amazing! In our spirit dwells the Spirit of God; the place He makes His home, His dwelling place, and where He abides. The place where His Holy Spirit and our human spirit touch. My favorite word is "Home", a place of warmth, hearth, belonging, and a place of acceptance. Home is a place that when you leave, you can't wait to get back to. When God created us, He put a deep yearning in our heart for intimacy with Him. A homesickness for our true home (coming home to the heart of the Father). I ask the Holy Spirit to make my human spirit a welcoming atmosphe

The River

Everything that has life requires water to live. The plants need water. Flowers, trees, grass, they all need water or they die. Same thing with people. People require water to survive. You and I need water. God sent Elijah to the brook Cherith to dwell, and to drink of the brook. 1 Kings 17:3-4 Being tired from His journey , Jesus was resting at Jacob's well when a Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her that if she had asked Him, He would have given her “Living Water”. Jesus is the source of that “Living Water”. In John 7:38, Jesus told the people, “He that believe on me, as the scripture haith said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” Zechariah tells us in Ze

Precious Thoughts

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are they works; and that my soul knoweth right well. Psalm 139:14 Today is a special day for me. Thirty years ago today I was blessed to give birth to a son. A son who makes me laugh. A son who works hard. A son who loves the Lord and teaches his children in the way they should go. It has been a blessing to watch him grow strong in the Lord and be an example for others to follow. Just has I was blessed with a son, I was doubly blessed twenty-eight years later to watch my son welcome his son (our grandson) on this very special day. Father and son share the same birthday. Oh, believe me, I thought and still think they are b

Write It Down and Run with It

Habakkuk 2:2 Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. I journal a lot. The Lord always speaks to me in the quite, early mornings, when it is just Him and I. It feels like the rest of the world is still sleeping. I write what is on my heart, go down a couple of lines, write His name, then wait for Him to speak to me. It is an awesome experience! When I pass on from this earth and my journals are left with my son, Danny, to read; he will know his Mother left him with a wonderful legacy. Thank you, Jesus, for your legacy in my life. Cliff Notes

All my life I have been a bookworm! I would spend my extra time at the library and then would get excited when the Book Mobile would come to town. Of course, I always got the limit and I still do today. I also remember my first trip to Barnes and Noble and Christian Book Outlet; talk about excitement! I had never seen so many study guides and reference books in my entire life! As a teacher of literature and history, I wanted my students to dig deep and see the whole picture when studying. I hated Shakespeare and Moby Dick until I had good teachers who brought the stories to life. I wanted that for my students. Alas, CliffsNotes appeared on the horizon. A way that cut down study time, gave yo

The Sin of Offense

Satan is the enemy of our soul. That is not a new concept to us. And we know that he knows our weaknesses and as such we should guard them so that he is not allowed to use them against us. But Satan is a master manipulator. He is a schemer. He knows that while you may guard your weaknesses you often leave your strengths vulnerable. One of the snares he lays for us is that of Offense. It’s an easy snare for him to set and one that can trap even the Godliest of saints. Why? Because its often initially justified. To be offended at someone is a normal reaction when they do something that hurts you. The initial offense is not necessarily a sin. But refusing to forgive that offense and allowing it

Power of Our Words

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts1:8 KJV Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21KJV It was only a year after we were married we turned our lives over to the Lord and were able to take in some serious Biblical truths we had never known before. One Sunday afternoon, things weren't going well. I don't really remember the details of it all, but we were disagreeing on something that was very important to me. I've never been one to use the word "hell" but

Worship From My Heart

We are created to worship. Worship is the easiest thing we can do, and yet the hardest when it comes to our flesh getting in the way. Just like it is so easy to get excited when everything is going good. When you get a raise, when you get a new job, that you have been wanting, when you are on top of the mountain praise comes easy. You worship with ease. It flows out of you like a river. The worship that should come out of you should never change. This is what God has been teaching me. I am in a season where I am on the potters wheel, where God is molding my heart and stripping me of all that does not belong. I have had to surrender to his hand. So in this season I have had to push through my

"Wasting" Yourself on Him

When I was eight years old I purchased a gift for my mother, a bottle of Blue Waltz perfume. If you are old enough to remember the 1950's, you may have heard of it. I really wanted my Mom to have this pretty bottle of rose water. Anything to make her feel better! She had been confined to her bed all the years I could remember, though she never complained, I knew she was very ill. All my memories are her and I snuggled together in her bed where she waited to hear all about my day. She listened carefully and laughed at my stories. We listened to the radio and sang along. But, she always brought out the big Family Bible, it was full of colored pictures and she would read me the stories and tell

The Training of a Mother

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 We all love the story of the Exodus. The Israelites had been in bondage. God had finally heard their prayer. He had sent Moses to deliver them from the hand of Pharaoh. It is amazing to read about God delivering His people. But when I think about the miraculous things that surrounded Moses and the Children of Israel, the one thing that always fascinates me is Moses’ mother. Hebrews tells us that it was by faith Moses was hid. By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

The Hard Stuff

Deuteronomy 31:8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. Isaiah 43:1-3 Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord you God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. 2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness 1 Peter 5:10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a lit

You can be Extraordinaire

The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 Before he became the great evangelist, D. L. Moody had a conversation that deeply impacted him and would direct the course of his life from that point on. Someone said to Moody, "You know, the world has yet to see what God can do with and through the man who is totally committed to Him." Those words went deep into Moody's heart, and he prayed, Lord, I want to be that man. He sure came close. The book of Acts is a story of ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things because they allowed God to have His way in their lives. In the same way, God wants to use
